Gas Detection Systems

Various gas detection systems are available for various applications.  Some of the most common systems are for Carbon  Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2).

The government has created acronyms to describe the various exposure limits that you should be familiar with.

Threshold Limit Values (TLV’s) refer to air borne concentrations of substances and represents conditions under which it is believed that nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed day after day without adverse health effects.

Threshold Limit Value—Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) The Time-Weighted Average concentration for a normal 8 hour workday and a 40 hour workweek, to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed, day after day without adverse effect.

Threshold Limit Value Short Term Exposure Limit (TLV-STEL).  A STEL is defined as a 15 minute TWA exposure which should not be exceeded at any time during a workday even if the 8 hour TWA is within the TLV-TWA. Exposures to the STEL should not occur more than four times per day. There should be at least 60 minutes between successive exposures on this range.

Threshold Limit Value—Ceiling. The concentration that should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure.

Threshold Limit Value—Permissible Exposure Limit. An exposure limit that is published and enforced by OSHA as a legal standard. PEL may be either a time-weighted-average (TWA) exposure limit (8-hour), a 15 minute short-term exposure limit (STEL), or a ceiling ( C ). The PEL’s are found in OSHA regulations 1910.1000.
