Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems |
As the popularity of VRF systems rises, more and more questions also arise. One of the most common questions is in regards to a 2 pipe versus a 3 pipe system. This depicts two different means to provide simultaneous heating and cooling to occupied spaces. There are obvious differences in piping design, layout and installation, but along with these differences in piping there are major differences in system operation as well. |

2 PIPE |
3 PIPE |
The most obvious difference between these systems is the amount of refrigerant piping. 3 pipe systems utilize less pipe by creating a distribution system rather than a branch controller from which a total of 32 pipes are distributed. Think of a multi-zone versus a vav system. Other less obvious differences are the amount of refrigerant required, the plenum space required for installation, and system redundancy. 3 pipe systems have individual solenoid valve boxes which provide individual control and system redundancy should there be a failure. |
What other differences can come into play between these systems? 1. Compressor redundancy: Sanyo provides 2 compressors per heat pump. Others provide only a single compressor with no redundancy. 2. Oil Level Safeties: Sanyo measures oil levels at all times to insure proper operation. If the oil level gets too low the system proceeds into an oil recovery mode. 3. 3 Speed Fans: Sanyo’s fan coils adjust the fan speed during operation. This provides not only improved comfort with more precise temperature and humidity control for the occupants, but also provides the owner with a more efficient system. 4. Heating Coil SAT: Sanyo utilizes their ability to modulate the fan speed to maintain a 104°F SAT. Other manufacturers cannot control the SAT which can result in low and uncomfortable discharge air temperatures in heating mode.
