AAON offers a complete line of geothermal (ground loop or ground source) products. Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems by AAON are among the most efficient, environmentally friendly ways to heat, cool and dehumidify buildings by recovering otherwise wasted energy and utilizing that energy to satisfy the needs of the building.

High-efficiency, self-contained and split-system AAON GSHP units can be placed in virtually any location within or outside the building and connected via a water loop. Heat is added and rejected from the loop using geoexchange from natural sources such as the ground, a pond or a well. Each unit responds only to the heating or cooling load of the zone(s) it serves. This provides excellent comfort levels for occupants, better control of energy use for building owners and lower seasonal operating costs. By providing both indoor and outdoor GSHP units, AAON offers you the flexibility to design a system that meets your exact needs.

Special AAON Features

Variable Capacity Compressor

AAON equipment can be provided with variable capacity scroll compressors. These systems improve comfort and efficiency in areas where heating and cooling loads are quite different by varying the capacity of the compressor to match the instantaneous heating or cooling required by the space. The compressor continuously adjusts its capacity to match the precise air temperature, or leaving water temperature, setpoint. During much of the season, the compressor operates at a reduced energy level but during periods of heavier demand the compressor ramps up capacity to maintain a constant temperature. In an air handler or rooftop unit, by combining the variable capacity compressor with a variable air volume fan system, efficiency is maximized and low operating costs are achieved.

Variable capacity compressors also offer a great way to increase capacity. The load matching ability of the compressor allows the initial purchase of the machine to be designed for the future capacity required; until the additional capacity is needed, the compressor will run at the highly efficient, lower capacity until additional load is added to the system – then the compressor will increase its capacity to match the new demand!

Direct-Drive, Backward Curved Fan

The AAON array of direct-drive, backward curved plenum fans, offers improved efficiency, quieter operation, superior uptime, a smaller footprint, and greater flexibility than comparable air moving devices in the HVAC industry. AAON offers fan arrays configurable from one to four, direct drive, backward curved, plenum fans in a frame assembly. By offering combinations of varying fan widths and diameters, the fan(s) can be selected at optimum operating efficiency. Direct-drive, backward curved impellers can require up to 15% less power than belt-driven, forward curved fans at the same duty requirements making them uniquely suited for high efficiency applications such as GSHP systems.

Rigid Polyurethane Foam Cabinet Construction

The AAON double wall, rigid polyurethane foam cabinet saves cooling and heating energy through improved insulation and air seals. This reduces the energy lost to the environment and reduces the building owner’s operating cost. Saved energy is saved money. As utility prices increase, heating and cooling energy lost through poor insulation and poor air seals will result in significant monetary losses to building owners. The purchase of the AAON rigid polyurethane foam cabinet will reduce these monetary losses through improved thermal resistance, thermal breaks, and quality air seals.

AAON Applications

Central Outdoor AAON Unit(s) with Smaller Indoor Units.

By utilizing high capacity, high efficiency, central GSHP rooftop unit(s) to provide outside air to occupied spaces, or interior units, the total number of units in the building can be reduced and complexity of the water piping can be simplified. An AAON high capacity unit may supply up to 230 tons of cooling capacity with only a single water connection. The air from this high capacity central GSHP rooftop unit can be ducted through conventional VAV or CV ductwork or the outside air can be used to supply smaller interior GSHP units that serve individual zones.

All AAON high capacity GSHP rooftop units are available with backup and/or supplemental heating capability. As dual fuel units the GSHP may include an additional heat source from natural gas, propane, steam, hot water or electric heat. Because the AAON GSHP units have no outdoor fans, they offer extremely quiet operation and have low maintenance requirements. The highly efficient operation of AAON GSHP systems allows you take advantage of numerous rebate programs available through many utilities and government agencies.

For added efficiency, AAON GSHP rooftop units are available with the AAONAIRE energy recovery device. AAONAIRE energy recovery systems provide energy savings by recycling energy. AAONAIRE systems also enhance indoor air quality by allowing larger amounts of outside air to be provided to the space and through improved humidity control. AAONAIRE systems save money through both an initial HVAC equipment size reduction and ongoing lifecycle operating savings. For much of the country, the payback for the AAONAIRE system is less than one year.

AAON Split-Systems for Sound and Space Sensitive Applications

An AAON split-system GSHP can be used in new or retrofit applications. In a retrofit application exterior air-cooled condensing units can be replaced with water-cooled condensing units and, in many applications, the existing refrigerant piping between the condensing unit and air handler can be reused. Because a water-cooled condenser uses no exterior fans, the unit sound is often not detectable by building occupants and neighbors.

By utilizing a split system, noisy indoor compressors can be removed from occupied spaces in office buildings, hotels, health care facilities, banks, schools, condominiums and apartments. The refrigerant-to-water heat exchanger, along with the compressor, can be located in a mechanical room or on the exterior of the building and only a quiet operating indoor fan and coil remain in the occupied space. This not only removes noise from the occupied space, it also removes compressor maintenance requirements from the occupied space and makes the interior unit smaller - saving valuable interior space.

Water-to-Water

AAON water-to-water systems are highly efficient units which can greatly reduce operational costs while at full load or part load conditions. Units may be selected with single or multiple circuits to provide redundancy and prevent unwanted downtime. AAON water-to-water systems provide conditioned water for radiant floor heating, domestic hot water, pool heating, as well as, snow and ice melting. AAON water-to-water heat pumps and chillers occupy less space than central station chillers and can be transported easily through doorways, elevators and hallways.
